Panic over

After sleeping on the issue last night I decided that the black spot I saw was probably a bruise and probably quite normal. Thus I didn't bother ringing the hospital.

Later this afternoon however I noticed that blood appeared to be seeping around the eye. Getting a bit more concerned about this more than anything I relented and rang the eye ward.

They assured me my first thought was correct and that the bruise was just seeping out a little bit.

Will keep looking tonight and tomorrow to see if there is any increase in pain or too much spread.

Probably not helped by the poor quality of my sleep the last few nights.

Sitting up more today has eased the pains I was feeling in my back and quite probably guts as well. I am certain that lying down for long periods does nothing good for the digestion.

Day 6

I think I will try a more vertical posture today by sitting more than lying down.

Woken this morning at an 0230hrs with what felt like a bit of indigestion. Maybe my body is starting to rebel against too much lying down. Can't think of how to prevent neck strain at the moment. Will have to think of something however. It is already noticeable even after the few minutes it has taken to write this short note out on the mobile phone as I sit on the edge of the bed.

False horizons

It is really odd because now when I tilt my head from side to side in a vertical plane I can see the bottom of the bubble staying flat.

Also there is a black spot in top right under my lid which I haven't seen before. Will call the quacks about it in the morning. Not sure if it's something to worry about or even if it's been there all the time or not. Can't hurt to call.

Breaks

The ten minute breaks seem to be getting shorter and the fifty minute ground inspection sessions seem to be getting longer. My back and neck are getting affected already.

When I do look up I can see a dark horizontal line at the top of my vision.

As the eye inverts everything I assume this is already the bottom of the gas bubble as it gets smaller. Didn't think I'd be seeing that so soon. Still it is already day 5 after the operation.

Lunch

Ali has just left after being here for lunch. She brought me pizza and doughnuts. Much appreciated the visit, especially as she walked here in the miserable weather.

Monday

Well here is the start of another week.

Starting to feel pain in back after spending too much time on my front. Still if it gets my eye sorted out I can do exercises afterwards.

Got woken up early this morning by a particularly loud dawn chorus. It might not have been that loud of course I may just not be sleeping as soundly as I normally do. Not doing anything but lying around is hardly going to tire me out now is it.

The weather last night was cold.

Saw the local weather this morning. Wouldn't you adam and eve it, first snow of the season on Dartmoor and I'm incapacitated at home unable to leave.

Another day spent looking at the floor. I will continue with watching Star Trek - Enterprise and listening to the radio.

Blurred vision

Vision is starting to improve already. When I open the left eye I can see shapes, colours etc but because of the gas bubble it's still very blurred.
Going to take a while to get it all good obviously but at least I am seeing progress of a sort.
Tried to find some info about the surgeon I have, on the web but maybe I spelt it wrong.
The Oreston crowd have come up with a plan to get me partially moved into FarFar Away. I'll be buying fridge, microwave etc. Will need a matress for the single bed which still needs constructing.

Mother

Just had a phone call from mother. Don't think she was too impressed with me being forcefull about her not coming down just yet. Not a lot she could do from the hotel anyway as I just spend my days wih the eyes downcast.

Sunday

Just had a nice visit from James, Pip & Oliver. Stayed for about 40mins. Managed to keep head down for most of it. Usual offers of assistance. I have some great mates. May get some more visitors later.

Settling in

Now on the second day after operation.

Maison came round yesterday for a chat.

Trying to stick quite rigidly to the 50 mins out of every hour with my head down. Spending some time on the spare bed, which is harder than my own bed and this gives me more support for my neck.

Sitting at the table in the lounge I don't do too much as it gives my neck issues unless I am right down with head on arms. This does upset my lower back instead.

Having to use the mobile phone for most comms as the laptop won't fit under my chin.

Going to the loo has changed as well. Missing one eye means the aim has become dodgy. Safer just to sit down. Means less cleaning.

Having a shower this morning was ok. Managed to get the shower head down low enough to avoid getting water in the eye.

Cleaning the eye isn't so bad so far. Have to see how I have done when I go back to infirmary.

How to stop going insane

Started this morning at 0700 when Ken picked me up to take me to the infirmary. A few small assessments and a wrist band. Felt nervous while on the gurney. The nurse chatted about my new bathroom. I was surprised to see that I didn't need to get out of my street clothes. The injections into the back of the eye hurt a little bit despite the numbing injections. The operation went okay I guess. I had a stinking headache after getting out. Seemed that they had pressed something into the temples for large parts of the procedure.

The speed of whole episode is the scary thing. From Sunday when I noticed there was something not quite right to today is only 4 days.

Not sure what will happen about work. It is going to take at least 3 weeks for me to do anything.

The surgeon has told me that I will get a cataract in the left eye in 6 - 12 months. Not sure if I'll get back offshore anytime soon. Enforced shore leave. Bugger.

Eye situation

Just come out of the surgeons office. The retina has become detatched due to my short-sightedness and there has been a slight bleed. Nothing to do with diet or impact.
If we did nothing then I would go blind in the left eye. As a result of the operation I will get a cataract in approx 6 to 12 months. Due to having had one detatched retina this predisposes me to a repeat in the left and another in the right. Damn scary.
I now have a nice big arrow over my left eye.

Eye surgery complete

Now out of surgery. Eye is starting to ache. Some gas called C2F6 is in there creating a bubble which needs to press against the retina hence the posturing forward. Will need to come back in the morning.
Now have to wait for blood pressure to drop before they'll allow me home.
Will try and see if I can rent a massage table so at least I can rest flat. If it gets close enough I can then use a computer or a tv on the floor.
